Help us empower the surfing communities

We want to give something back to the places we visit and we have found are really cool way to do it through kiva.org.

When you get to travel the world looking for the best surf camps and call that work, life could be worse. During our travel we get to see a lot of beautiful places and meet a lot of fantastic people - but it's inevitable to also come across things that you don't want to see; poverty, corruption and injustice. In our work and our travel we are looking for ways to give something back to the places we visit and alleviate these burdens to extent we can. We believe that responsible surf traveling has a good impact on the locations we visit and we strive to work with people who work for their community, creating jobs and opportunities for their neighbours. Looking for means to take this further we came across Kiva.

Kiva is an organisation that empowers people across the world to lend money to entrepreneurs across the world by combining microfinance with the internet. As a lender you chose what projects to support and get regular updates on how the entrepreneur progresses. As a lender, people who would struggle to get a bank loan get access to affordable ways to reach their dreams. As we see it, the beauty in this is that when a loan is repaid it also confirms that the money has been used where it makes a difference. Kiva has processed loans to a value of over 120 million USD since the start in 2004 and 98.4% of the loans get fully repaid.

We started the Surf Traveler lending team in the summer of 2009 and managed to raise 100 loans in the first 6 months, mainly by engaging friends and family. We believe the surfing community can do better than this and want to invite you all to join us in lightening poverty in the countries we visit. In return this will not only give you a better future but also a discount when you book your next surf trip.
